Florianópolis is the capital of the state Santa Catarina, and lies on the Island of Ilha de Santa Catarina which is connected with the main land with the longest steel suspension bridge of Brazil.
The city is very modern, but on the island side it feels like a small city, because most of the industry is situated on the mainland. The biggest attractions in the city are the colonial buildings, such as the Palácio Cruz e Souza, which is the state museum and the Cathedral on Praça 15 de Novembro. Furthermore the city has different museums you can visit.
The things that make Florianópolis a popular tourist destination are mostly the natural beauty of the island of Santa Catarina, the beautiful beaches and bays.
