Alta Floresta is situated in the extreme north of Mato Grosso, 873 km north of Cuiabá the Capital and at the edge of pristine southern Amazon Rainforest. The area is considered one of the best in the Brazilian Amazon for spotting rare birds and mammals, including the endangered white-nosed bearded saki monkey, brown titi money, tapir, giant river otter, three-toed sloth and five species of macaws.
Alta Floresta is the end of the road: beyond it to the north is the vast expanse of the jungle. The town itself has no attractions and has grown rapidly as an agricultural and logging center since its foundation in the early 1970s.
